I am impressed with the voice of Sam Smith, a very unique talent and range of vocal control. I see a long future career for this singer. Now, get to it. Surround yourself with other musical talent, only do the songs you deem a challenge and are impressed with yourself. Some of these songs are not your best option, rather just a showcase for you to do your thing. I give it 3 stars and will continue to listen to get a solid opinion of what you have done here. I may revisit this review and change my rating, but for now this CD is just OK.
I've been waiting for this LP to drop since February. It does NOT disappoint. There are, of course, the singles that we've already been privileged to hear: "Latch," "La La La," "Money On My Mind," "Stay With Me," "Lay Me Down," "Not In That Way," "Leave Your Lover," and "Make It To Me"--all deserving of their hit status. I personally think "Like I Can," with its tenuous relationship between pop beats and wistful lyricism, is a gem. This album is both compulsive listening AND easy to put on repeat. Welcome to superstardom, Sam Smith.
I absolutely love the hit songs on this album: Latch, Lay Me Down, Stay With Me, and also Drowning Shadows, Meant to Be, Like I Can, and Nirvana. However, I somewhat disappointed about a few things. First off, I was surprised and disappointed that the song In the Lonely Hour, which is the title of the album, is not even on it! Also, prior to buying this album, I was listening to all the songs on Youtube. The videos of Latch, Lay Me Down, and Nirvana are all acoustic versions, which are completely different from the album versions. Yes, even Latch, which is acoustic on this album as well, is different from the acoustic music video! I fell in love with the slightly more emotional and tender (as emotional as the album version is) version in the acoustic video, along with the more delicate sounds of the stringed instruments. So while I still love the album version, I still prefer the video version. Lay Me Down is also not the same as either the official music video, or the acoustic video. I don't care for the addition of the choir, because it drowns out his amazing, emotional voice towards the end that can be much better heard in the acoustic one. The same is true for Nirvana; the acoustic recording is so beautiful and emotional, yet the album recording, which includes background singers, seems a bit noisy and stagy in comparison. I'm also disappointed that some of these acoustic tracks are not available to download from Amazon. I did find Latch, though. Despite all that, I still very much enjoy the album as a whole.
I bought the vinyl version of this, so I want to clarify what you'll get. The vinyl will have the 14 songs from the deluxe version of the album (see the second picture). So on your vinyl, you'll have all 14 even though the Amazon description only lists 10 songs from the standard version. However, the AutoRip will only be for the 10 songs. I'm not sure if there's a way for Amazon to clarify or change that, but that's what happened to me.As for the music... Sam Smith is a great singer. These songs are beautiful. If you can't tell from the title, it's sad. I love the song "Restart" (one of the few upbeat songs) so I am sad it's not on the MP3 version I got. All in all, I would recommend this album.
Nobody has a voice like Sam Smith (or at least for all of the music I have heard). His songs are typically deep and resonate with many people. Though I prefer some songs more than others, Sam Smith with his amazing voice, more unique background beats, and lyrical meaning is worth more than just a few dollars for this CD. The deluxe version includes a few more tracks and is definitely worth it.
I never heard of Sam Smith like probally everyone until that night in March when he blew the roof off the dump on SNL. I couldn`t believe the voice coming from this kid, Usually when you watch a performer on SNL it`s the boy band of the second or the flavor of the month artist, well whoever booked this kid deserves a raise because he made this kid a STAR that night. As soon as he sang "Lay me Down" before wiping tears from my eyes i was searching the web looking for everything about this kid, i haven`t seen a artist that really moved me to tears since i saw Michael Jackson perform on "Motown 25" that night he did the Moonwalk for the first time and lipsync to "Billie Jean" which if you watch now still gives me chills like 33 years later, Well that`s how i felt watching this kid sing that night, His cd is just plain AWESOME, i`m telling all my friends to spend 11 bucks and buy it, i bought it at 1201am the night it was released. Sam if your not up for Grammys especially Best new Artist and especially song and record of the year for "Lay me Down" {listen to the acoustic version} it will be a crime...BUY THIS CD!!! NOW..TELL YOUR FRIENDS!!
It's amazing how young Sam Smith is and he's still able to put out an album that's full of a lot of emotions. It kind of reminds me of Adele in a way. Just the whole "beyond their years" experience. There are many songs to relate to on this album if you've ever had relationships in your life.There has been some controversy with "Stay With Me" since it's basically "Won't Back Down" by Tom Petty but honestly to me it's such an emotional song that if you push that controversy away the song will really enter you soul.The overall sound and tone of his voice is something that's not often heard by someone of his "looks". It's hard to explain but I've heard the expression of "blue eyed soul" and that's what he is. He's full of soul and R & B which can bring a wide range of listeners to his music. It's definitely unique and I'd like everyone to listen to him with an open mind and really feel the emotions that have been put into each song.
