Jean-Baptiste Grenouille is born in late 19th Century France to parents who is rejected by his parents and all who would otherwise want a little baby to nourish and cherish. The few who do encounter him as a baby note that he smells "evil," like an abomination, whatever that means; it turns out he literally has no smell to him, unlike other sweet babies. But Grenouille survives the rejection of a woman, priest and others to discover that his total way of appreciating the world is through the unique sense of smell that HE has. For he can recognize any object or person by smell, and this is what feeds his soul and sets his identity - that is until the day he encounters a wholly new intoxicating smell. What he will do upon reaching the source of that lovely odor will shock the reader to the core of his or her mind and heart!Grenouille is now a changed man and seeks to create perfumes that will entrance other as he has been enraptured. But how he will do it is both mesmerizing and shocking, again and again. For creating the perfect perfume makes him even more of a misogynist than previously and his hate will lead to numerous victims as he seeks to rid the world of malodorous men, women, and children. This is not your average horror or serial killer story. For the author depicts this psychotic individual with such neutrality and writes in such a literate style that the reader is compelled to keep rapidly turning the pages until the last shocking event! The story also gives a nice historical touch to the story, depicting the poverty, wealth, degradation and depravity of the times in a France that may be post-Revolution but is none the better for the overwhelming changes. One word only perfectly describes this novel - amazing!

Heard about this book in an interview with Kurt Cobain, who said that this book was the inspiration for the song "Scentless Apprentice". Being a Nirvana fan, I had to give it a shot. I can honestly say that this, despite it being a bit confusing at times, is one of my favorite stories I have ever read. Definitely one to read several times, as I'm convinced that more/deeper meaning would be revealed each and every time.If you're thinking of getting it, DO.

I heard in an interview that this was Kurt Cobain's favorite book. The book is a psychological thriller - the book covers the art and essence of smell and perfumery on a philosophical level. It's an interesting read actually and I felt like it had increased my creativity.

It's a quirky read. It uses an omniscient narrator, the main character is a psychopath, and every description concerns scent. Smells. Lots of smells. If you want to read about smells, or learn how to write about smells, this book's unmatched. I started reading to learn about writing smells. I kept reading because of its dark lurid tale and quirky setup. Nothing like it nowadays.I recommend the movie too. It's the kind of story you remember whether you want to or not.

I love this book. I bought it the year it first came out, and every few years I reread it. It is like Gormenghast in that it is too intense to reread more often than that. Historical fiction is my favorite genre, and while this is not strictly in that category, it suffices. Just reread the Kindle edition and am waiting for 2020 when it'll be time to reread again!

The book fills in the gabs that the film left out...The story, on its' own is good and keeps your attention. But, just as the Harry Potter series is great on its' own...it somewhat mirrors WWII...a period of ethnic cleansing ....Perfume also mirrors symbolically, Jean-Baptiste's obsession resulting in terror with Robespierre's obsession of the French Revolution also resulting in the reign of terror . Throughout the book Grenouile's wardrobe changes...during the French Revolution how people dressed represented their political persuasion. The end of the book...The devouring of Jean-Baptiste leaving his clothing behind, really can mirror the End of Robespierre's reign of Terror and the Revolution, and the beginning of the Napoleonic era..Either way...the story is worth reading.

Definitely on my top 10 of best books ever read in my life. Although it is a translation from the original (I believe it was written in German originally) it is still a masterpiece in the use of the English language. A must read for every single person in the world, if only to relish the use of wonderfully descriptive narrative which is so sadly lacking in the modern world ! As all good books, one is transported into another world each time you pick it up.

Perfume is a wonderfully written, magical tale full that is sometimes funny, other times scary and often just plain weird. Peer into the incredible, horrible life (and mind) of Grenouille, a man who, from birth, revolts the senses of anyone in his presence. Peer over his shoulder as he goes on a fantastic, perverse quest of self-discovery. At times you may pity him; at times you may loathe him - but it’s doubtful that one would ever forget him. This is one hell of a great read, and it was also made into one of my favorite films. Enjoy!

Was this a story, a meditation, a poem? It played with your mind and your emotion. It displayed a total disdain for human kind. Where in the mind does this reality come from? Yet it was totally engaging. It was like a ride you did not want to get off from. I have never read a book such as this. And I cannot discern whether I liked it or not.
